The sonata “Disquietude” was written over the course of a few weeks in October, during a period of emotional unrest and mental chaos. The result is a work that musically emphasizes this turmoil, whether through the off-kilter rhythms of “Anxiety”, the harmonic ambiguity of “Disquiet”, or the frenetic pace of “Panic”. Throughout the work, the oboe is at odds with the piano, ultimately finding a voice that both compliments and contrasts its accompaniment; the result is at moments unsettling, and at others lyrical and haunting—but always with an emotional depth that brings to life the ‘disquiet’ of the work’s circumstances.
