Erâth Symphony No. 1 “Consolation” is the first in a projected seven-symphony cycle of tone poems, each tracing the story of one of the books in the series of fantasy novels “The Redemption of Erâth.”
It was written for the Rutgers Symphony Orchestra, and has had the first two movements read in a workshop setting.

In the first of these Erâth symphonies, I have taken the tradition of the symphonic tone poem and expanded upon it, building a narrative through music that parallels the story of the first book of the “Redemption of Erâth” series, Consolation. The book is separated into five distinct sections, and so the symphony is divided into five movements, each corresponding the the section in narrative and title.
In “Tales by the Fire”, we witness the birth of the story’s main character and protagonist, Brandyé, as his home is engulfed in flames and his parents perish. Through the first movement we are taken through his childhood, encounters with dreadful wolves, and visions of dead cities.
“Consolation” portrays Brandyé’s homeland, and introduces the work’s antagonist, Danâr. We witness the first flight of an injured falcon, and journey to the land’s capital city, Daevàr’s Hut.
The third movement, “Whispers in the Dark,” introduces a plot by the townsfolk to overthrow the evil Lord Danâr, and the permanent obscuring of the sun by clouds that never lift.
"In “Loss”, we bear witness to the trail of an innocent man sentenced to death, and Brandyé’s attempt to stop it—an attempt that tragically leads to the death of his best friend, Sonora. As Brandyé flees Daevàr’s Hut, he is hunted by vicious wolves, only to return home and find his grandfather and only remaining family on his deathbed.
Finally, “Banishment” takes us through Brandyé’s own capture and trial by Danâr’s constables, and his ultimate exile from the lands of Consolation to a bleak shore on the edge of a dreadful black sea.
