I have felt a deep fondness and connection to the musical Requiem ever since I first heart Mozart’s as a child; the opportunity to sing in Britten’s War Requiem at a performance in Sheffield Cathedral in 2001 cemented this love. For years since, I have wanted to write one, but it was only in the past few years that I felt adequate to the task.
In particular, I wanted to pay homage to my father, whose own love of classical music was a youthful inspiration to me, introducing me as he did to Mozart, and Beethoven, and Brahms, and more. However, it was important to me that this not be a funeral work; I wanted him to hear it, to experience it before he died, so that I could, in a way, thank him for the inspiration that led me to where I am today.
That performance has yet to happen, but luckily my father also has yet to die, so there is still opportunity in the future!
