Ritual is a small work for chamber orchestra, written specifically for the Helix Ensemble at Rutgers’ Mason Gross School of the Arts. One of my first efforts to combine the idioms of rock and classical music, the titular “ritual” refers to the process by which the music was created (the coffee, the sitting at the keyboard, the writing of notes), as well as both the stylistic comparisons to traditionally classical form and structure and the heavy metal rhythms that can found the ritualistic audience movements in a rock concert environment.
